I, for one, didn’t have as bleak an experience as you describe – but it was not pleasant. It primarily depends on the temperament and personality of the spouse. In my case, we had a licensed mediation councilor draw up an agreement with us, guided by the Oregon “Equitable” asset separation rules. This occurred before any contentious recrimination phase occurred, so the mediator immediately cut off agrandizing claims. (The mediator’s prior experience allowed early, rapid detection of such attempts.)
The personalities of each spouse dramatically affects the process – especially, having tried valiantly to hold things together too long. People tend to try to do this until the increasing frustrations yield the disasters you list. I only experienced some of them – annoying and damaging enough.
